The Sindh Higher Education Commission (Sindh HEC), Directorate of Strategic Planning, in collaboration with the Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), Salim Habib University (SHU), organized a seminar titled “Industrial Waste Symbiosis in Sindh” under the theme “Inter-Company Waste-to-Input Exchange” on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Auditorium A, SHU.

The event was graced by Prof. Dr. S. M. Tariq Rafi, Chairman, Sindh HEC, and Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Chairman, CIEC, as the Chief Guests.

Through a series of panel discussions, the seminar brought together policymakers, industry leaders, environmental experts, researchers, and academics to explore opportunities for transforming industrial waste into valuable production inputs and advancing sustainable industrial practices across Sindh.

The first panel, Policy, Regulation & Institutional Framework, examined the policies, regulations, and institutional arrangements required to support industrial waste symbiosis. The panel featured Mr. Shahid Lutfi, Director, Exponent Engineers (Pvt.) Ltd., Mr. Ashkar Dawar, Director and Former Director General, Sindh Building Control Authority, Mr. Syed Nadeem Arif, Managing Director, EMC Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd., Mr. Zubair Ahmed Channa, Chief Executive Officer, TransKarachi, and Mr. Muhammad Imran Sabir, Regional Director, Head Office, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency.

The second panel, Industrial Mapping, Technology & Market Mechanisms, focused on industrial waste mapping, technological solutions, and viable mechanisms for waste-to-input exchange. It featured Mr. Shabee-ul-Husnain and Dr. Imtiaz Ali, Members, Zephyr Waste Solutions, Prof. Dr. Engr. Abdul Razaque Sahito, Professor and Director, IEEM, MUET Jamshoro, and Dr. Saeed Uddin Ahmed, Department of Architecture & Planning, NED University of Engineering & Technology.

The third panel, Research Implementation, Gaps & Circular Economy, featured Prof. Dr. Syed Muhammad Imtiazuddin, University of Karachi & Technical Director, AVM Chemical Industries, Prof. Dr. Atif Mustafa, Professor and Chairman, Department of Environmental Engineering, Dr. Mansoor Ali, Visiting Academic, and Dr. Mehmood Ali, Professor, NED University, and Dr. Jamshaid Iqbal, Associate Professor, and Dr. Manzoor Ahmed Sanjrani, Faculty Member, IoBM, Karachi.

Notable SHU representatives included Prof. Dr. Irfan Hyder, Vice Chancellor; Dr. Muhammad Hussain Habib, Registrar; deans, directors, heads of departments, faculty members, and staff.
